Horseshoes have been used as protection charms for centuries in rural Britain, they are fondly known as the king of protection charms.  Most commonly nailed to front doors to guarantee good fortune for the house.  In 1885 Thomas Q. Couch said, "There are few farmhouses without it, and scarcely a boat or vessel put to sea without this talisman"  They can be nailed to the door or wall either facing up or down, it is believed that the prongs pointing up keeps in the good luck, while pointing down keeps evil out. Years ago horseshoes were made from iron, which in magic is a very important metal to protect against malevolent spirits and goblins!  This tradition is still commonly used today to stop demons and evil spirits entering the home.
